Meet Joe Bull, our Head of Engineering

We are excited to introduce Joe Bull, our new Head of Engineering at Applied Thermal Control. Joe joined our team on 22nd January, 2024, and is already making significant strides in driving our technical advancements.

As the Head of Engineering, Joe leads our Technical team with a primary focus on transitioning our product range towards low-GWP refrigerants. This critical task involves extensive research, development, and the implementation of new technologies that align with current environmental standards. Joe’s role is pivotal in ensuring that ATC stays ahead of industry regulations while maintaining our commitment to sustainability.

Joe brings with him over 10 years of design experience, largely in bespoke automation and special purpose machinery. He has a wealth of experience in delivering challenging, high-value projects across a variety of industries as Lead Engineer and Project Manager. Additionally, Joe is a registered Incorporated Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, underscoring his professional credentials and dedication to engineering excellence.

A typical week for Joe starts with a team review, where he discusses the previous week’s achievements and sets priorities for the current week. His days are filled with a variety of tasks, from R&D work on new chillers to providing production and service support. Joe thrives on problem-solving, finding it incredibly satisfying to tackle complex challenges and devise effective solutions.

Standing at 6’7” tall, Joe is often asked if he plays basketball. However, his interests lie elsewhere. Outside of work, Joe enjoys sailing, cycling, shooting, and playing the drums. Although many of these hobbies have taken a back seat recently due to house renovations, they remain his favourite pastimes. Joe also follows the Leicester Tigers and has an interesting past as a regional-level sprinter in the 100m and 200m events.

Looking ahead, Joe is particularly excited about the future of ATC, especially the transition to low-GWP refrigerants. This industry-wide challenge is largely driven by F-Gas regulations, which aim to reduce the environmental impact of refrigerants. While alternative refrigerants are largely flammable and present unique challenges, Joe and his team are dedicated to ensuring their safe deployment through innovative design standards. The phase-down of HFCs will keep the Technical team busy as they continually optimise the product range based on the latest legislation and performance requirements.

Joe is looking forward to tackling these challenges head on and improving internal processes to ensure that Applied Thermal Control remains at the forefront of the industry.

“The ATC management team are delighted to have Joe on board. His experience in dealing with complex projects in high pressure environments is vital for our company during this period of heavy redevelopment work. Joe has already demonstrated strong leadership and management skills and it is hoped that he will be a key part of the ATC team for years to come. I am already enjoying working with Joe and am very excited about the new developments we will soon be able to announce.”
