How to Protect Your Chiller During a Shutdown
If you’re finishing up for the holiday, or just taking the systems down for a period where they won’t be needed, it’s always good to give the systems a clean and shut them down properly, this makes it easier to start them back up again!
Before starting, it’s always good to have what you will need for the job ahead to hand and know what you’re going to be dealing with. Check the fluid used in the chiller, and whether any cleaning products will cause damage to the application before using them. Draining anything of fluids can get messy, gloves, and a roll of towel to hand is advised.
Once the unit is drained, it’s a good opportunity to clean the system out and disinfect. A good cleaner and cycle will remove debris and scale build up, prolonging the life of the unit, filters and keeping your application safe, whilst also killing off any lingering organisms that may escape your normal biocide.
Flush the system thoroughly with fresh water to make sure there’s no remnants of cleaner left behind and drain / leave to dry, and the system is good to go into storage, or be used when needed. You can also leave a small amount of antifreeze with inhibitor in the chiller tank to keep everything wet, but with a reduced risk of biological growth.
