Which power supply option should I choose for my unit?

The correct power supply for your recirculating chiller depends on the chiller model, installation location, and electrical supply available at your site.

ATC chillers are available with different electrical configurations across the product range. Not every electrical supply is available for every model, so the available configuration should always be checked against the specification for the chiller you are considering.

What information should I provide?

When discussing your chiller requirements with ATC, please confirm:

  • The voltage available at the installation
  • Whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase
  • The electrical frequency (50Hz or 60Hz)
  • The country or region in which the chiller will be installed

This allows us to identify the appropriate electrical configuration alongside the cooling, temperature, flow, and other requirements of your application.

Single-phase or three-phase

Single-phase power is commonly available for smaller electrical loads and is therefore used by many of our smaller recirculating chillers.

Three-phase power is commonly used for larger industrial equipment and allows higher-power chillers to operate without the very high current that would otherwise be required from a single-phase supply.

You do not need to choose between single- and three-phase based on which is inherently “better”. The correct choice is determined by the requirements of the chiller and the electrical infrastructure available at your installation.

Why do voltage and frequency matter?

Voltage and frequency vary between countries and facilities. For example, equipment installed in the UK or Europe may require a different electrical configuration from equipment destined for North America.

The complete supply specification therefore matters. Simply stating “230V” or “three-phase” may not provide enough information to select the correct configuration.

Where possible, provide the full electrical supply available. The ATC team can then confirm whether a compatible standard electrical configuration is available for the required chiller.

 

What if my required power supply isn't listed?

ATC’s standard product range is based on predefined and approved electrical configurations. This helps us to maintain consistent product performance, manufacturing processes, lead times, and support.

If the electrical supply you require is not available as a standard configuration for your chosen model, please speak to our team.

Depending on the chiller and application, there may be another standard model or configuration that meets your requirements. Requirements outside of our standard offering can also be reviewed as a non-standard request, subject to Engineering assessment and approval.

Can I use a transformer?

For some products, an external transformer may provide an alternative solution.

For example, the MG-Series External Transformer Accessory Pack (AC00001) allows a compatible 220-240V unit to accept a 115V supply.

Transformer solutions are model-specific, so compatibility should always be confirmed before ordering.

What about plugs and cordsets?

For compatible smaller single-phase chillers, alternative cordsets may also be available where the standard UK 3-pin 13A plug is not appropriate for the installation.

The Alternative Cordset Accessory Pack (AC00003) provides alternative connection options for supported models and markets.
