RS485 Communications

RS485 Communications provide a digital interface for integrating compatible ATC chillers with external equipment, control systems, and wider automated processes.

Using the chiller’s RS485 connection, an external system can communicate with the chiller to monitor operating information and access supported control functions. This makes RS485 particularly useful where the chiller forms part of a larger machine, OEM system, or automated installation.

Depending on the chiller model and controller, RS485 communications can provide access to functions and operating information such as:

  • Process fluid temperature
  • Temperature setpoint
  • Flow information
  • Chiller status
  • Alarm and fault information
  • Supported parameter monitoring and control

The exact information and commands available depend on the selected chiller, so the relevant communications documentation should be consulted when integrating the unit into an external control system.

RS485 communications may be particularly useful where:

  • The chiller is integrated into a larger machine or OEM system
  • Operating information needs to be monitored remotely
  • Chiller data needs to be incorporated into a wider control system
  • Process parameters need to be monitored or adjusted through external equipment
  • Multiple pieces of equipment form part of an automated process

RS485 provides a practical communications interface for applications where greater visibility and integration are required than can be provided by simple status contacts alone.

RS485 and Remote Stop/Start

RS485 Communications should not be confused with the Remote Stop/Start Pack (OP00005).

RS485 alone does not provide remote stop/start functionality. Where the chiller needs to be enabled from an external control system, the Remote Stop/Start Pack should be specified separately.

RS485 & Volt-Free Contacts

RS485 and Volt-Free Contacts (VFCs) provide different methods of integrating the chiller with external equipment.

RS485 provides digital communication for accessing supported chiller data and control functions, while VFCs provide a simpler interface for communicating defined chiller status or alarm conditions.

Both are included as standard on most current ATC units, providing flexible options for integration with external systems.
