Applied Thermal Control are exhibiting at the Battery Tech Expo 2023

Posted: 14 April 2023

The Battery Tech Expo is an annual event which showcases the latest developments and technologies in the battery industry. The event attracts battery manufacturers, suppliers, and researchers from around the world and provides an opportunity to learn about the latest technologies, innovations, and advancements in the battery industry, as well as network with other industry professionals.

The battery technology industry has been rapidly expanding in recent years, with the demand for batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage increasing every year. With the growing need for temperature control in battery manufacturing and testing processes, process cooling equipment has become an essential tool to this industry.

Applied Thermal Control is a leading manufacturer and supplier of high-quality process cooling equipment that is designed to provide efficient and reliable temperature control for a range of industrial applications, including the battery industry. Our products are widely used to maintain consistent temperature control during the production process, which is crucial for ensuring the quality and performance of batteries. We have successfully supported our customers with projects relating to battery development, rapid charging systems, and the testing of electrical components for EV vehicles.

At the Battery Tech Expo 2023, we will be showcasing our range of process cooling equipment, including recirculating chillers, water to water heat exchangers, and airblast coolers. These products are designed to provide precise and reliable temperature control, and they are built to withstand the harsh conditions of industrial environments.

Our equipment is designed to operate at high levels of efficiency, which helps to reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs for battery manufacturers/ This is particularly important in the battery industry, where energy consumption can be a major expense. Our equipment also offers a high level of customisation, which allows it to be tailored to the specific needs of each customer. Our experienced engineers work closely with our sales team, and customers, to understand the specific needs of our customers and provide customised solutions that meet their requirements.

Recirculating Chillers

Recirculating chillers are commonly used in the battery industry for temperature control during battery testing and manufacturing processes. These chillers use a refrigeration cycle to cool a fluid, typically water or a water-glycol mixture, which is then circulated through the battery system to maintain a consistent temperature. This process is critical for ensuring battery performance and durability, as temperature fluctuations can have a significant impact on battery life and efficiency.

Water-to-Water Heat Exchangers

Water to water heat exchangers are another commonly used tool in the battery industry. These devices transfer heat between two separate water circuits without mixing the fluids, allowing for precise temperature control in battery manufacturing and testing processes. Water to water heat exchangers are especially useful for applications that require extremely low temperatures, such as cryogenic battery testing.

Airblast Coolers

Airblast coolers use ambient air to remove heat from a fluid or system, making them an ideal choice for applications where water is not readily available, or where water consumption must be minimised. Airblast coolers are commonly used in outdoor battery testing applications, where they can provide efficient and cost-effective cooling.

Additional Options

In the battery industry, process cooling equipment may be used to maintain a higher temperature. This can be achieved through the addition of a heater pack.

Lithium-ion batteries, for example, are typically produced through a series of chemical reactions that are highly sensitive to temperature. The ideal operating temperature range for these reactions is often very narrow and tightly controlled, and deviations from this range can result in reduced battery performance, shorter battery lifetimes, and even safety hazards.

In some cases, maintaining a higher temperature with process cooling equipment can help to accelerate certain chemical reactions, leading to faster production rates and higher throughput. Additionally, a higher temperature can help to reduce the viscosity of certain materials, making them easier to handle and process. Overall, the use of a heater pack within process cooling equipment can play an important role in ensuring the quality, efficiency, and safety of battery operations.

It is also possible to add a low temperature pack to process cooling equipment. In the battery industry, equipment may be required to operate at low temperatures for several reasons, including:

  • Produce testing at low temperature ranges - testing down to -20°C is often required to ensure both battery and component function in low temperature environments
  • Control of low temperature processes - In some battery manufacturing processes, low temperatures are required to maintain the stability of the materials being processes. Process cooling equipment can be used to precisely control and maintain low temperatures for these processes.
